    PXL Vision for SBB

"The collaboration with PXL Vision was very good. The challenges were solved together and the system is now stable and efficient.”

Product Manager Financial Services at SBB

THE CASE Identity check for money transfers

The PXL Ident solution has proven itself in the demanding environment of SBB's travel centres. Thanks to the close partnership, challenges were quickly overcome and the process was continuously improved.

    About SBB and Western Union

SBB is Switzerland's national railway company and the country's largest transport operator. SBB has been working with Western Union, a global provider of international money transfers, for over 30 years. Thanks to this partnership, customers can send or receive money abroad at all SBB stations. Money can be sent abroad with Western Union directly at the SBB Travel Centre or via the WesternUnion@SBB app. Recipients can collect the money in cash at any Western Union agent worldwide or have it transferred to a bank account or mobile wallet.

SBB acts as a local partner and operates the Western Union service in its travel centres, making it easier to access Western Union money transfer services throughout Switzerland. This partnership makes it particularly easy to transfer money abroad directly at the station - a benefit for travellers, people with a migration background and anyone who wants to send or receive money quickly and easily.

    Challenge

SBB offers money transfers with Western Union at its travel centres in Switzerland for both international and Swiss customers. Regulatory requirements, in particular the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA), make reliable identity verification and complete documentation of transaction receipts absolutely essential. PXL Vision supports SBB with the PXL Ident product in the White Label Plus version.

The original customer registration process was largely manual. The process was supported by the Dacuda scanner mouse. When this system reached the end of its lifecycle, SBB needed to find a new, future-proof solution. The challenge: a high monthly transaction throughput with the need for a fast and smooth process in assisted sales.

Solution: PXL Ident White Label Plus

SBB has chosen an identification solution from PXL Vision that is specifically tailored to the requirements of the Western Union money transfer process: PXL Ident White Label Plus.

White labelling made it possible to design the entire user interface of the identification process in SBB's corporate design. From the colours to the fonts and wording, everything was implemented individually according to SBB's specifications.

Integration took just over a year (2023) before the system was stable at all locations. The biggest challenge was scaling up to handle the high volume of transactions. After initial problems (congestion, network stability, camera handling), the system was optimised and stabilised together with PXL Vision. Close collaboration and a dedicated task force contributed significantly to the success.

The result is a reduced workflow for fast, efficient travel centre processes for the following three scan types (including average percentage distribution) Barcode scans of transaction receipts (81%), ID scans (mainly ID cards for new customer onboarding, 17%) and other document scans (2%), with an overall very high success rate of 98%.

In the future, SBB would like to see even more automation, for example by automatically recognising and starting the scanning process for known customers. "The collaboration with PXL Vision was very good. The challenges were solved together and the system is now stable and efficient," says René Ottiger, Product Manager Financial Services at SBB.
