PXL Vision for Zebrabox
“In PXL Ident, we have found a scalable solution for Switzerland, France, and beyond. It is a single platform that recognises identity documents from across the globe and integrates seamlessly into our customer journey.”
THE CASE Rent storage space – secure, digital and seamless
Self-storage provider Zebrabox had a clear goal: to enable customers to book a storage unit entirely online – even in the evenings or at weekends – without compromising on security standards. The process of signing a rental agreement should be as straightforward as booking a hotel room, while ensuring that only authorised users have access to the premises.
For Zebrabox, preventing criminal activity and creating a safe environment for all customers is essential, not optional. The challenge was to pair this security requirement with a fully digital, frictionless process that operates 24/7, requires no app, and integrates seamlessly into the existing booking flow.
Another factor had to be considered: the chosen solution had to be designed with international growth in mind from the outset. Given the company’s ongoing expansion into France and Spain, a Switzerland-only approach was not sufficient. In PXL Ident, Zebrabox has found precisely the right foundation.
ABOUT ZEBRABOX
The Swiss self-storage market leader is on a growth trajectory
Zebrabox AG is the leading provider of self-storage solutions in Switzerland. What started as the first company of its kind in continental Europe in Zurich-Oerlikon in 1979 has grown to 15 locations and around 7,750 storage units. Zebrabox offers flexible, climate-controlled and secure storage solutions ranging from 1 m³ to 50 m² to private and business customers across Switzerland.
Success in the domestic market provides a solid foundation for targeted international expansion. Zebrabox has been operating in Spain through a franchise partnership since the summer of 2023 and entered the French market in January 2025. This expansion is not a trial run, but a central pillar of the company's strategy. Zebrabox has consistently geared its entire digital infrastructure towards international expansion, from its multilingual platform to its identity verification process.
Contract first, identity next – entirely digital
The booking process at Zebrabox is clearly structured: customers first sign their rental agreement online. They are then prompted to verify their identity using PXL Ident by holding their ID or driving licence up to their smartphone camera. No app download, branch visit or waiting is required. Once their identity has been verified, they instantly receive their personal access code for the Zebrabox building via text message.
In the background, an internal API automatically cross-checks the name on the ID document with the details in the rental agreement. This additional layer of security ensures that the person signing the agreement is the same person being granted access, fully automated and without any manual intervention.
WHY PXL VISION?
Simplicity, scalability and true internationalisation
“When choosing a partner, four criteria were key for us: high-quality UX/UI, ease of technical implementation, genuine scalability, and a service tailored to our specific requirements,” explains Dominique Schaffner, CMO at Zebrabox.
However, a key strategic factor was also decisive: Zebrabox needed a solution that could be used not only in Switzerland, but also in France, Spain, and future markets beyond—one capable of verifying identity documents from across the globe. PXL Ident supports documents from over 165 countries, automatically recognising the relevant security features and adapting the verification process accordingly. For a company embarking on international expansion, this offers a significant advantage over isolated national solutions.
INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION
One platform, three markets – with further growth on the horizon
What began as a digital onboarding tool at Zebrabox in Switzerland has evolved into a cornerstone of the company’s growth strategy. PXL Ident can be rolled out internationally without additional development work. Following France, the next step is Spain, where Zebrabox already operates via a franchise, integration into the booking process will follow once the CRM connection is complete. This is supported by the multilingual, scalable platform architecture developed with the digital agency nexum. PXL Ident integrates seamlessly, enabling cross-border identity verification for a vast range of ID documents without the need for adjustments or system changes.
LOOKING AHEAD
Paperless: The next step toward a fully digital customer journey
Zebrabox views digitalisation as an ongoing process rather than a one-off project. The ‘Paperless’ initiative is designed to drive this evolution forward: in the future, all customer interactions are aimed at being entirely digital and seamless, eliminating the need for physical documents. Digital identity verification with PXL Ident forms the essential foundation for this. The current transaction volume of around 2,000 identifications per year is just the beginning. With each additional location and market, alongside the continued digitisation of the booking process, this figure is set to grow significantly.
